Active listening skills are very important when you are raising a family. You must learn to listen to your teenager and all of their life goals and dreams without passing judgment. Sometimes this means listening to the ramblings of your daughter of how she is going to American Idol auditions so that she can be the next Kelly Clarkson. That's OK and let her dream. Let her talk about how she will keep the attention of Paula and Randy and how Simon will love her instantly because she will be one of the best singers to hit the American Idol show. Wish her well and let her dream! Even when you want to close your eyes and do some daydreaming of your own, your daughter is sharing her goals and dreams (no matter how far-fetched they are) with you and you should be thankful she wants to talk to you! Keep in mind that while you would love for her to talk to you about housecleaning tips, she is interested in sharing her life with you and you can't ask for much more.
Sons and dads have as much difficulty connecting as mothers and daughters do. Teenage boys will likely talk to their moms about girls before their dads and that's because mom is usually the one around. Make plans to keep the family lines of communication open with everyone in the family. Plan for father and son days out as well as daughters and Mother's Day out as well, then you can switch. It is important to plan for these special days once a month if at all possible.

Go ahead, flip on the tube and watch Maury talk to kids about what is really the problem. Then, study the parents when they make it onto the stage and you are likely to find the problem.
The fact is that many parents are too busy to be the kind of parents that the Cleavers were in Leave it to Beaver but nonetheless, parents still are responsible for providing their children with emotional support and well-grounded roots in order for everyone to function as a happy participant of the family unit. The problem that many parents don't seem to solve early enough is being able to recognize when a member of the family needs extra attention and when it is finally noticed, it can be too late.
